BENEFICIARIES

Pediatric HIV/AIDS Program of Children’s Hospital Oakland. Since 1986, the Pediatric HIV/AIDS program at Children’s Hospital Oakland has provided comprehensive, state-of-the-art care for children with known or suspected HIV infection. Treatment ranges from initial diagnosis through all stages of disease progression, including end-stage disease and terminal care. By participating in the AIDS clinical trials groups through N.I.H., the hospital’s patients are offered the chance to be treated with new HIV drug therapies, vaccines, and medications to help prevent life-threatening infections—treatments not otherwise available to them.

Maitri. Mission Statement: No one should have to suffer or die alone. Our purpose is to provide compassionate residential services to men and women in need of hospice and / or 24-hour skilled nursing care, and to cultivate the deepest respect and love for life among our residents and caregivers. Maitri serves exclusively individuals with late-stage, debilitating AIDS, with a focus on those who might otherwise be without adequate resources or care.

PROGRAM: Founded in 1987, Maitri is a state-licensed, 15-bed facility providing 24-hour comprehensive care to low-income men and women severely debilitated by HIV/AIDS. Maitri offers a broad range of residential services to individuals who need hospice care, long-term skilled nursing care or short-term intensive transitional support. Since opening eighteen years ago, Maitri has admitted and served over 500 late-stage AIDS patients and is the only AIDS-specific residential care facility in the Bay Area focusing exclusively on the underserved community of those dying of or severely debilitated by AIDS. Our 15 beds represent 50% of San Francisco’s non-institutional hospice beds.

At Maitri, skilled professionals and dedicated volunteers join together to provide a high level of human support to meet the physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual needs associated with HIV-related conditions and other difficult life experiences. In addition, we provide access to a wealth of supportive services in the community. Website: www.maitrisf.org

Project Inform. Founded in 1985, Project Inform is a national nonprofit, community based organization working to end the AIDS epidemic. Our mission is to: Inform people living with HIV, their caregivers and their healthcare and service providers about the treatment and monitoring of HIV disease; Advocate to facilitate research towards a cure and for appropriate policies, legislation and funding for HIV research, treatment and care; and Inspire people to make informed choices, take effective action in the fight against HIV and choose hope over despair.

As the nation’s leading independent, authoritative resource for complete and up-to-date HIV/AIDS treatment information, Project Inform is relied upon by individuals around the world for information about optimal treatment strategies, critical treatment access issues, and advances in research.
