Beneficiaries for
2004

Pediatric HIV/AIDS Program of Children’s Hospital Oakland. Since 1986, the Pediatric HIV/AIDS program at Children’s Hospital Oakland has provided comprehensive, state-of-the-art care for children with known or suspected HIV infection. Treatment ranges from initial diagnosis through all stages of disease progression, including end-stage disease and terminal care. By participating in the AIDS clinical trials groups through N.I.H., the hospital’s patients are offered the chance to be treated with new HIV drug therapies, vaccines, and medications to help prevent life-threatening infections— treatments not otherwise available to them.

Positive Resource Center. Positive Resource Center remains the only place for people living with HIV/AIDS to get comprehensive benefits counseling and employment services in San Francisco.
The organization has led the service community's response to the changes in the epidemic since its inception, and is regarded as the model program in the United States for agencies hoping to offer similar services. PRC was the first agency to assist people living with HIV/AIDS with comprehensive counseling for obtaining essential financial and medical benefits combined with a full spectrum of vocational rehabilitation and employment services. Furthermore, PRC provides training and technical assistance throughout California on complex benefits issues.

  • Through PRC's continuum of services, clients receive no-cost access to:
  • Professional benefits analysis, advocacy, and counseling about accessing public and private financial and health care benefits such as Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI), long-term disability, health insurance, life insurance, and Medi-Cal.
  • Representation before administrative law judges for reconsideration of disability denials.
  • Employment and vocational rehabilitation planning, counseling and coordination, job development and placement, support groups, and computer access and training for clients entering or re-entering the workplace.
  • Regular workshops/clinics designed to equip people with HIV/AIDS to consider and develop employment goals and plans as well as understand their legal rights and responsibilities concerning benefits, employment, housing, and credit.

A&PI Wellness Center. Asian & Pacific Islander Wellness Center (A&PI Wellness Center) educates, supports, empowers, and advocates for Asian and Pacific Islander (A&PI) communities, particularly A&P's living with or at-risk for HIV/AIDS. Founded in 1987 as a grassroots response to the HIV/AIDS crisis in communities of color, it is the oldest nonprofit organization in North America targeting A&PI communities around sexual health and HIV/AIDS services. A&PI Wellness Center is based in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood, provides services regionally, statewide, and nationally, and maintains linkages with non-governmental organizations throughout Asia and the Pacific.

Our target audiences include immigrants and refugees; incarcerated and runaway youth; lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, and questioning youth; gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men; transgender persons; and women working in massage parlors.
Free and confidential services for people living with HIV include treatment case management; mental health counseling; on-site primary medical and psychiatric care; client and treatment advocacy; and individual and group support. As HIV prevention priorities change to include “prevention for positives,” A&PI Wellness Center developed one of the nation’s first program models to prevent HIV transmission by working directly with HIV positive A&PIs.

Our health education programs are designed to reach diverse A&PI communities in the San Francisco Bay Area, regardless of HIV status, and include on-site and mobile HIV testing; prevention case management; needle exchange; volunteer and peer leadership; workshops and support groups; street outreach; and community-wide events throughout San Francisco, such as the Vietnamese New Year Tet Festival, Castro Street Fair, and hosting the A&PI Stage at the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Pride Celebration each June.

A&PI Wellness Center builds capacity with community-based organizations and health departments in program design and evaluation, organizational and leadership development, and community mobilization. We offer services through consultation; technical assistance; trainings for service providers; convening national peer networks; sharing curricula; and disseminating information. We collaborate with community-based researchers to learn more about A&PI attitudes and behaviors and the effectiveness of HIV prevention and care efforts. In addition, A&PI Wellness Center runs the California Statewide Treatment Education Program (CSTEP), an intensive HIV treatment training and certification conducted year round in English and Spanish with providers who work with people living with HIV/AIDS.
