Pediatric HIV/AIDS Program of Children’s Hospital Oakland. Since 1986, the Pediatric HIV/AIDS program at Children’s Hospital Oakland has provided comprehensive, state-of-the-art care for children with known or suspected HIV infection. Treatment ranges from initial diagnosis through all stages of disease progression, including end-stage disease and terminal care. By participating in the AIDS clinical trials groups through N.I.H., the hospital’s patients are offered the chance to be treated with new HIV drug therapies, vaccines, and medications to help prevent life-threatening infections— treatments not otherwise available to them.

HIV Education Program at New Conservatory Theatre Center. Since 1986 The New Conservatory Theater center has led in the field of AIDS Prevention through Theater-In-Education Presentations. The plays deal with age-appropriate AIDS prevention while encouraging development of self-esteem and individual responsibility. After each play, there is a discussion periods with the actors facilitated by an AIDS educator. While recent statistics show a decline in AIDS related deaths, there still remains an increase in HIV infections, especially among teenage girls. Specific plays include: Get Real Too! two fast-paced, entertaining 10 minute theater presentations targeting Kindergarten/ First Grades and Second/Third Grades; Get Real!, aimed at Forth and Fifth Grades employing fast, funny vignettes while addressing AIDS issues in a fun, adventures-type format; The Inner Circle-Changing Times which tours Northern California from April to June annually, aimed at Junior High and High School aged students. The Inner Circle has been replicated internationally and, to date, has reached upwards of 5 million young people in the United States and Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Puerto Rico.

Tenderloin AIDS Resource Center (TARC). TARC is a 501(c)(3) community-based organization that respects and meets the needs of the diverse and often ignored residents of San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood. Through non-judgmental outreach, education, testing, client advocacy and practical, direct services, TARC aims to lessen the incidence of HIV infection, disease progression and homelessness. TARC offers comprehensive services to more than 600 people living with HIV. We offer intensive case management, HIV and treatment education and practical peer support with life tasks. TARC partners with other agencies to bring primary medical and psychiatric care to some of the most underserved and frequently ignored Tenderloin residents through our participation in the Tenderloin Care collaboration. TARC’s Prevention Services make contact with almost 7,000 people each year, bringing life saving HIV prevention information to people in the streets, hotels and plazas of the neighborhood and in our community drop-in center. In a ground-breaking new project, we train clients to go into their communities to talk about HIV prevention and to encourage their friends and neighbors to come to our community center for HIV antibody testing. We offer on-site HIV antibody testing and risk reduction counseling to over 100 people each month.
